They're not circles though, they're hexagons of uniform shape. I have that phobia but this doesn't instill the same iasues. Btw many scientists don't actually consider this a true phobia since it's more of an innate biological response to anything that resembles diseased or festering wounds on skin.
I might be wrong but I guess if they could make these at "airful" prices, they would. I think most people would like to buy one even out of curiosity if it was 70 bucks (say).
like most things, companies try to recoup r&d costs in the price of what they make.. but yeah $2500 is robbery.. even $100 for that would make a fortune if it performs well
I believe they had to create special 3D printers just to make these things, and it takes like 2-3 days to print 1. Plus you have to factor in the R&D costs. Let the infrastructure get up to speed, and the market take over, and it'll drop significantly over time.
Also it flies through the air very differently from a regular ball because of those holes, that's the main reason it wasn't introduced to the NBA yet. But yeah, practicing at home would be perfect with it
I appreciate his honesty on the fact that it doesn't bounce as high even with such a small difference, I've seen way too many people reviewing the ball and watching as it only goes like 75% as high when dropped from the same height and going "yep, it bounces exactly the same".
When you drop with the hand, you hand can soften the drop. The only way to make the drop consistent is with a machine. You can see in the second drop, they bounce back to the same height
Exactly. The CEO of basketball is like "give me some satisfying ideas!" but then they ran out of ideas and the CEO was going to get mad (because he wanted to be satisfied) so they came up with this idea also in order to satisfy the satisfying idea quota. I love business talk.
I legitimately saw this and was going to buy one even at the $2500 price tag. They are sold out though, a month too late though. I wonder how the weight compares.
Watch a video of pros trying to shoot with it, because of the additional air resistance when you go to shoot a three, your original calculations will result in an air ball
It's def some type of TPU/rubber, but I completely agree, this shouldn't be anything more than $100, and that's after blowing way too much money on marketing lol
I don't play basketball, but I can imagine that this would make it difficult to dribble without looking at the ball. The impact sound gives you a clue about where the ball is in front of you and how long it will take to come back up to your hand. But maybe for professionals it doesn't matter so much?
Problem: You want to practice at home when everyone else is sleeping or otherwise does not want to be disturbed, but your regular basketball is too loud.
tbh the silent aspect is pretty interesting and should be the primary selling point i remember as a kid with my driveway hoop the neighbors got cranky if was shooting hoops too late (was a duplex), even beyond that, the neighborhood was so quite im pretty sure the whole neighbhoorhood could hear it lol but at that price no one's buying it lol
I would wonder how on longer shots how it would compare with the trajectory and spin of a regular ball. It seems that it would be less subject to wind in some ways, as wind might go through it, but also the holes would create slight drag with spin? With dribbling, I see how it would work quite similarly, but a long pass or deep shot seems like it would certainly be discernibly affected. I’m sure that other companies will find a way to make a product much cheaper over time, too.

I think it will stumble on the same trouble as that airless tire, i.e. dirt, gravel got stuck in all those holes and then change it's properties.
£2500 means failure right there that price means the product is 100% failing right out of the gate
Yes. It's common sense. It's going to fail because of its flawed design. I think it will have buyers, the ultra rich, for whom 2500 is nothing.

$5 ball, don’t even need to think about cost.
$2500 ball, not even going to think about it because of cost.
Same thing really. No reason to think about either purchase, you instantly know whether you’re going to get it or not. XD
To be fair, he did say in the same sentence that price would be an obstacle to sales. But Brownlee's a multi-millionaire. He probably makes $2,500 per hour!
If you're rich enough to have an indoor basketball court, you're DEFINITELY picking one of these up. I do think that if they get the price down to around 100 bucks, there are a lot of people who would love a quiet ball, especially for playing in the evening.
lmfao....dude...wilsons are already $100
in what druggy world are you deluding yourself into thinking this will be that price in under 500 years hahaha
if you're lucky it'll be $500 before your grandchildren are dead.
yes its 3d printed....i dare you to try, you'll fail i promise you that.
these aren't made with filament and in open air.
it's a special and unique form of 3d printing involving a sealed bin of synthetic dust.
if you print one from filament at home it'll be a failure, you need the right machine and you can't afford it.
"What happened to that ball we paid $2500 for?!?"
"Sorry, it went over the fence!"
Shooting the basketball should be interesting with the wind going through the ball.

@jakemccoy I'm assuming it's the same weight as a normal basketball. If it was lighter, it wouldn't be viable.
@@name-vi6fs If there is a little wind (like outdoors), that wind is getting caught up in those holes. There is no way around the physics with the ball shown here. Perhaps they will make a version with a skin to prevent that.
@@jakemccoyI’m not sure the holes makes as much difference as you think. It’s going to create some amount of drag and therefore need to be accounted for if you want to truly emulate a basketball, but it’s current form might not be that far off.

They're not circles though, they're hexagons of uniform shape. I have that phobia but this doesn't instill the same iasues. I never realized how much I enjoy the sound of the bounce.
Ah yes, 2500 dollars for a ball that costs $2.50 in filament
Make one first, then tell us how much it cost.
3D printed in china for $2.99
I might be wrong but I guess if they could make these at "airful" prices, they would.

Half the reason I bother to bounce a basketball anymore is for how it sounds!
and smells!

When you start running out of ideas to satisfy the company, CEO
Exactly. The CEO of basketball is like "give me some satisfying ideas!" but then they ran out of ideas and the CEO was going to get mad (because he wanted to be satisfied) so they came up with this idea also in order to satisfy the satisfying idea quota. I love business talk.
What a ridiculous price for a basketball 😂
I legitimately saw this and was going to buy one even at the $2500 price tag. They are sold out though, a month too late though. I wonder how the weight compares.
Watch a video of pros trying to shoot with it, because of the additional air resistance when you go to shoot a three, your original calculations will result in an air ball

@@AConquerorsVendetta a lot of people play ball in heat, plastic would melt 😂 would love to see that or happen on a cheap version
i dont think marques understands how trypophobia works 💀
I don't play basketball, but I can imagine that this would make it difficult to dribble without looking at the ball. The impact sound gives you a clue about where the ball is in front of you and how long it will take to come back up to your hand. But maybe for professionals it doesn't matter so much?
A solution in search of a problem
Problem: You want to practice at home when everyone else is sleeping or otherwise does not want to be disturbed, but your regular basketball is too loud.
@willdejong7763 which is fine... if you overlook that 2.5k price tag
tbh the silent aspect is pretty interesting and should be the primary selling point
i remember as a kid with my driveway hoop the neighbors got cranky if was shooting hoops too late (was a duplex), even beyond that, the neighborhood was so quite im pretty sure the whole neighbhoorhood could hear it lol
but at that price no one's buying it lol
aliens used to hoop wit that jawn😂
The $2500 didn't throw me off but the voice definitely did.
That bounce feel like an alien landing on earth and trying to jive talk!😅
Seems like they would put a cover on it for better grip and to keep crap out of the holes.
But then why design this in the first place? You already have a ball designed with a cover on it.
Play with that on a slightly windy day in the hood ... and it is GONE
